GENE WINKLER IS AVAILABLE:
THE SOUND AND THE FURY Two of our city's prophets recently died. Two of my heroes, two men whom I admired and worked with and loved. Rabbi Arnold Wolf died on December 23 of a heart attack, and the Rev. Arthur Griffin died on the same day. Arnold Wolf led Temple KAM Isaiah Israel, Chicago's oldest Jewish congregation, for twenty years, 1980-2000. In 1957 he helped launch Congregation Solel in Highland Park, and at both congregations he helped his people ask the right questions. The Chicago 7 defendants and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were among the invited speakers. Art Griffin served for thirty years as pastor of First Congregational Baptist Church on Chicago's West Side. Every U.S. President since Abraham Lincoln (except our present president) has spoken in that church's lofty sanctuary. Dr. Griffin was a man of great compassion but also a man who possessed the confidence and honesty to challenge our city's political establishment - over and over again. I had the privilege of working with Rabbi Wolf when we served together on the board of Inspired Partnerships. When the discussions about crumbling churches and temples got too hot, Arnold would always inject a note of humor and insight. When Protestants for the Common Good held our first major rally, Arthur Griffin hosted us. Our speaker was the Reverend James Lawson, the hero of David Halberstam's book, The Children, about the Nashville, Tennessee, sit-ins. Halberstam, the descendent of nine generations of rabbis, came to introduce Jim that memorable day. Clergy who stand faithfully and prophetically are, sadly enough, few and far between. Most of us go along so that we can get along. Art Griffin and Arnold Wolf remind us of our calling. Peace, Welcome to Worship at University Church! We're glad that you have joined us this morning. We're always pleased to see members and friends. We welcome visitors and give thanks for your presence among us. We welcome you to this community which seeks to be faithful people in this day and time. We are a multi-racial, open and affirming congregation which works at being anti-racist. We trust your experience of worship will nourish and sustain you in the week ahead. Please introduce yourself to those around you. Please sign the Friendship and Communication sheets when they are passed around. We hope you will share any comments or needs that you have on the sheets or with the pastor. Social Hour Immediately following worship, you are invited to the social hour in our dining room located on our first floor, adjacent to the sanctuary entrance. You are important to us. Please join us for snacks and conversation. You may still receive messages with different return addresses, but please use the “universitychurchchicago.org” version. We hope to have all e-mail addresses with correct return addresses in the near future. We will continue to receive e-mails sent to the old rcn addresses, but only for a short period of time. SUNDAY, JANUARY 4 - There will be a meeting of all who would like to participate in the Social Witness Ministry of University Church at 12:20 p.m. after the social hour, on Sunday, January 4. Would you like to be part of the Prayer Chain? They are the folks who pray for those who request prayers in Joys and Concerns or by talking with the Pastors. If you are interested, please put a note on the clipboard with your email address (if you have one) or a contact phone number. UNIVERSITY CHURCH NEEDS YOU!!!! .....to sign up for social hour. The sign-up sheets are hanging on the dining room wall. Pick at least one Sunday this year to host social hour. OPEN DATES: January 11, 18, & 25; and all of February and March. Hosting Social Hour can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, but usually involves bringing and setting up snacks for about 75 people. The coffee and lemonade mix are provided. This followed by clean up. It's a great way to participate in the life of our church! NEW OPTION FOR SOCIAL HOUR: There is a new way you can help with social hour. The last Sunday of each month will be Team Sunday for eight people to sign up to bring one food item apiece and to pitch in with set up and clean up. Also one person is asked to sign up to be coordinator to help people locate table cloths, dishes, and other necessary things. This is a great opportunity for anyone who prefers to host social hour with other people rather than being responsible for the entire event. We greatly appreciate your help. COPIES OF DR.
